Media Release - 01 December 2015

New Parks and Open Spaces Contractor announced

The Manawatu District Council has awarded its Open Spaces Maintenance contract to a new contractor to the District – Recreational Services.

The Open Spaces contract includes the maintenance of all of the Manawatu District’s parks, reserves and open spaces. Activities include mowing, sportsgrounds preparation, toilet cleaning, cemeteries, playground and garden maintenance.

The awarding of the contract comes after a comprehensive and robust two-stage competitive process to find a contractor to provide Open Space Maintenance Services for up to seven years and three months.  Council approved a report to award the contract at its extraordinary meeting on 30 November. The value of the contract is over $10m over the life of the contract.

Council’s community facilities manager Doug Tate is excited about the opportunities and value Recreational Services will bring to the entire District.

“Recreational Services are a family-owned business whose values reflect those of our community and Council.  Our community has a proud history of beautiful quality parks and reserves,” says Mr Tate. “I’m confident Recreational Services are going to deliver not just great parks, but on-going value and opportunities for our entire district.”

“Manawatu is a beautiful district and we are very proud and privileged to be awarded the contract to look after the many wonderful parks within the district,” says Recreational Services general manager Cameron Parr. “As a family-owned company, we place a lot of value on having close working relationships with the clients and communities we work in. With over 23 years’ experience working with Local Government, we are looking forward to getting stuck into work in the Manawatu District and plan on partnering with local businesses and sub-contractors to ensure we are making the most of the skills and knowledge already on the ground.”

Recreational Services and Council are working together preparing the new contract that commences on Monday 29 February 2016.
